The Federated States of Micronesia have initiated legal proceedings against plans to expand a coal power station half a world away.
The power station, already the largest emitter in the Czech Republic, would become one of the biggest power plants in Europe if the expansion goes ahead.
Micronesia has almost no land more than a meter above sea level, so the threat of sea level rises as a result of global warming is very real to the small island nation. The court case is intended to raise the profile of island states affected by rising seas, and also try to expand the operation of environmental impact assessments to an international scale.
